WWII OPA Red Point Meat Ration Tokens
OPA (Office of Price Administration) Red Point tokens were part of the U.S. rationing system during World War II. First put out in 1944 these tokens were used to give change for ration stamps when purchasing meats and fats.
The tokens were made from vulcanized fiber, slightly smaller than a dime, and were marked with “OPA Red Point 1” along with two random letters. The letter combination was believed to be for anti-counterfeiting and/or tracking. During the run, 30 different combinations were put out. Collectors today prize certain letter combinations like the semi-rare “YC” & “XC”, the rare “MM”, or the ultra-rare “MV” which can be more valuable.
OPA tokens were last used in 1945, as the war ended and rationing systems were phased out .
